Former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo didn’t hold back, accusing President Bola Tinubu of betrayal. The man who once emptied his account to help secure Tinubu’s election victory is now regretting his loyalty. Dokubo claims Tinubu’s “thank you” for all that support has been utter neglect and a swift disregard for his sacrifices.
Dokubo’s outburst, which went viral on social media, captured the depth of his frustration. In his words, Tinubu isn’t the man he thought he was. After funding campaigns and urging Nigerians to support Tinubu, Dokubo feels abandoned, even vowing to align with the North and leave Tinubu behind as the 2027 elections approach. He boldly admitted he once asked Nigerians to hold him accountable if Tinubu failed, a declaration now haunting him.
In a scathing rebuke, Dokubo accused the Yoruba of betrayal, proclaiming his new alliance with Northern leaders as the only reliable path. “From today, I will work and form an alliance with the North. President Tinubu betrayed me after I spent all my money campaigning for him,” he fumed, signaling a shift in loyalty. Dokubo, who has long prided himself on his connection to Tinubu, now seems disillusioned, expressing deep regret for ever supporting the president.
Interestingly, Dokubo’s friendship with Tinubu is no new story. He’s mentioned numerous times his ties to Tinubu, dating back to the early 90s, professing faith in his leadership and commitment to justice. But, according to Dokubo, that vision of Tinubu is now nothing more than a disappointing memory.
In 2023, Dokubo openly pledged his loyalty to Tinubu, claiming he wasn’t interested in a federal appointment but was simply a dedicated friend. He promised that those around him could count on his support for Tinubu. But now, that friendship seems shattered beyond repair, with Dokubo promising to rally the North in what seems like an all-out move to distance himself from Tinubu’s administration.
