Torrential rains in Malaysia have caused severe flooding, displacing over 122,000 people from their homes. According to disaster officials, at least three deaths have occurred, and authorities warn that the number could increase amid continuing heavy rains.
The worst-hit state is Kelantan, with 63% of displaced people; other affected states include Terengganu, Selangor, and Johor. The rescue operations continue: there are 679 shelters opened for the housing of evacuees.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has dispatched additional relief supplies to the affected states and forbade all cabinet members from going on leave to attend to the crisis.
This year’s flooding has displaced more people than Malaysia’s devastating 2014 disaster, raising concerns that the impacts of the monsoon are worsening.
