Ramaphosa Faces Resignation Calls Over 5-Year Nigerian Visa

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement of a simplified visa process for Nigerian citizens to get visas has caused disagreement in South Africa, with some people asking for him to step down. The initiative, designed to increase economic and tourism activities, was revealed at the 11th South Africa-Nigeria Bi-National Commission meeting in Cape Town on December 3. Some people disagree, saying the government is focusing more on international relationships than local issues, and they want the decision to be changed.

The presidency has explained that this initiative is part of larger efforts to update and simplify visa application processes worldwide Ramaphosa said that the easier visa process is meant to help Nigerian business people by giving those who meet the requirements a five-year visa that lets them enter multiple times. Nigerian nationals will no longer need to show their passport when applying for a visa.

Despite criticism, the government maintains that the policy is meant to make the bilateral ties between the two countries stronger and help them work together better in business. This announcement was released during a period when tensions were high between Nigerians and South Africans, often seen in strong arguments on social media. Critics argue that the easier visa rules might make existing social and economic problems in South Africa even worse.
