A gunman who murdered about 10 people in a rampage in a small town in Montenegro had on Thursday, January 2, succumbed to his self-inflicted injuries after attempting suicide, according to a report by the country’s interior minister, Danilo Saranovic.

The gunman, identified by police as Aleksandar Martinovic, aged 45, had attempted suicide close to his home in the town of Cetinje after being cornered by police.

Minister Saranovic who made his report via told Montenegro’s state broadcaster, RTCG added;

“When he saw that he was in a hopeless situation, he attempted suicide. He did not succumb to his injuries on the spot, but during the transport to hospital.”

How It Happened

After opening fire at a restaurant in Cetinje, a small town located 38 km (23.6 miles) west of Podgorica the Montenegrin capital on Wednesday afternoon, where he killed four people, Martinovic went on the run.

He then moved on to three other locations, killing at least six more people, two children included and leaving four other people suffering life-threatening injuries.

Martinovic, according to the police, has a history of illegal weapons possession and police director, Lazar Scepanovic remarked Wednesday evening that the suspect was thought to have been drinking heavily before the shooting.

Wednesday’s incident shocked
It is not everyday that the country of 605,000 people experiences mass shooting, therefore, this is a shocking incident to residents. A three-day national mourning has been declared, with President Jakov Milatovic criticizing the attack and tagging it “horrific”.

The authorities are now considering tightening criteria for owning and carrying firearms, including mulling over the possibility of initiating a complete ban on weapons altogether.
