Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have claimed at least 70 lives over the past day, according to Palestinian medics, as the conflict’s toll deepens and diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire intensify. This latest record of deaths comes as a devastation to a region that is already weary and torn by a 15-month-old war, making calls for a truce more pressing than ever.

A Night of Horror in Gaza City

Among the casualties, 17 people were killed in two airstrikes on homes in Gaza City. One devastating strike in the early hours obliterated the Al-Ghoula family home, leaving a scene of chaos and grief.

“At about 2 a.m., we were woken up by the sound of a huge explosion,” recounted Ahmed Ayyan, a neighbor. “Most of them are women and children, they are all civilians. There is no one there who shot missiles or is part of the resistance.”

Residents and medics scrambled to search for survivors beneath the rubble, as flames and smoke rose from what remained of the house. Several children were among the dead, medics confirmed.

Hours later, another airstrike leveled a house in Gaza City, killing five people and leaving at least 10 others feared trapped under the debris, according to the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service.

Widening Strikes and Mounting Death Toll

Elsewhere, Israeli military operations continued in Beit Hanoun, a northern Gaza town, where the army reported destroying a Hamas military complex. Additional strikes in Jabalia and near Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza claimed six more lives, Palestinian medics said. In just 24 hours, the death toll has risen to 70.

Renewed Push for Ceasefire

Amidst the chaos and violence, a new push for a ceasefire is underway. Israeli negotiators have resumed talks in Doha, facilitated by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, with support from the Biden administration. The efforts are seen as critical ahead of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

Hamas has expressed a commitment to reaching an agreement, though the distance between the two sides remains unclear. In a video released Saturday, Hamas showcased Israeli hostage Liri Albag, identified in local media as a soldier, urging Israel to act swiftly to secure hostages’ release. Albag warned their lives were endangered by continued Israeli military actions.

A Fragile Hope for Peace

As the rubble settles and families mourn their losses, the need for a ceasefire grows ever more urgent. Yet, with both sides entrenched and civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict, the path to peace remains fraught with challenges. Whether the latest diplomatic efforts can bring an end to the violence remains to be seen, but for the people of Gaza, time is running out.
