Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have rejected the appointment of Dr. J.Y. Musa an Ally of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike as the party’s legal representative at the Appeal and Supreme Courts. Eleven out of seventeen NWC members signed a petition dated January 21, 2025, requesting that the courts disregard Dr. Musa’s appointment. The petition, acknowledged by the registries of both courts, argues that the appointment violates Article 42 of the PDP constitution, which grants the National Legal Adviser, not the National Chairman, the authority to appoint external legal counsel.

Connection to Anyanwu’s Legal Battle

This dispute is directly linked to the ongoing legal battle involving Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, the former PDP National Secretary. An Enugu High Court initially removed Anyanwu from his position, a decision upheld by the Court of Appeal on December 20, 2024. Anyanwu has appealed to the Supreme Court and continues to refuse to relinquish his position.

Allegations of Bias and Compromised Integrity

The dissenting NWC members express concerns that Dr. Musa’s appointment is inappropriate and compromises the party’s integrity. They allege that Dr. Musa is a close ally of Minister Nyesom Wike, suggesting a potential conflict of interest. Despite this opposition, Acting National Chairman Amb. Iliya Damagum, in a letter to the courts, has instructed Dr. Musa to represent the PDP in the Supreme Court appeal.

Conclusion

The internal conflict within the PDP over Dr. Musa’s appointment exposes deep divisions within the party’s leadership. The situation highlights a significant crisis of authority and raises serious questions about the party’s ability to present a unified front in crucial legal matters. The outcome of the Supreme Court case, and the resolution of the dispute surrounding legal representation, will have significant consequences for the party’s future stability and its ability to function effectively. The ongoing legal battles, coupled with these internal disagreements, threaten to further destabilize the PDP at a critical juncture.
