In what could be described as a tragedy that struck the 149 Battalion in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, Borno State, a fierce attack by Boko Haram terrorists claimed the lives of over 20 Nigerian Army personnel and left several others missing.

The attack, which occurred on Friday, January 24, 2025, saw insurgents storm the military base with multiple gun trucks, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos. Sources revealed that the assault lasted several hours, during which the insurgents razed operational vehicles and buildings.

High-Profile Losses and Casualties

Among the fatalities were the battalion’s commanding officer, two senior officers, and the base medical director. A military source stated, “The insurgents came heavily armed, attacking the base in waves. Many of our men are still unaccounted for, and several others sustained injuries.”

Apart from the recovered bodies, the exact number of missing soldiers remains unclear. Security personnel are still combing the area for survivors.

Malam-Fatori: A Community in Peril

Malam-Fatori, a border town between Nigeria and Niger Republic, has long been a refuge for thousands displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency. This latest attack has heightened fears over the safety of civilians in the area.

The town’s strategic location makes it a frequent target for insurgents, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. Civilians and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the area now face greater risks due to the heightened insecurity.

Recurring Terrorist Attacks: A Disturbing Trend

This incident follows another attack days earlier at the Forward Operating Base in Damboa Local Government Area, where Boko Haram fighters launched a pre-dawn raid, killing several soldiers and leaving others missing. The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction of Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for both attacks and released images of their fighters attacking the Damboa base.

Why It Matters

The Boko Haram attacks on military bases in Borno State raise critical concerns about Nigeria’s ability to combat the resurgence of terrorism in the northeast. The boldness of the insurgents, coupled with apparent deficiencies in manpower and resources, highlights vulnerabilities in the country’s defense infrastructure.

This resurgence poses broader implications beyond security. The northeast, a major food-producing region in Nigeria, has been severely affected by the insurgency. Renewed violence could exacerbate food insecurity across the country, which is already grappling with inflation and economic hardship. Furthermore, these attacks undermine public confidence in the government’s commitment to ending the insurgency and protecting its citizens.

Bottom Line

The escalating attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP in Nigeria’s northeast demand urgent attention from the government and military leadership. A comprehensive strategy to bolster military capacity, enhance intelligence operations, and protect vulnerable communities is critical. Without swift and decisive action, the resurgence of terrorism could further destabilize the region and intensify Nigeria’s ongoing security and humanitarian crises.
