Ikwechegh Regrets Assault On Bolt Driver, Calls Incident Unfortunate

Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, has expressed remorse for the assault on Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.

Ikwechegh made the remark on Tuesday while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme.

In October 2024, Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), made news for physically and verbally assaulting Abuwatseya.

The Abia representative also threatened to “make Abuwatseya disappear.”

The legislator later apologised to Abuwatseya, and the dispute was claimed to have been settled discreetly.

Ikwechegh described the occurrence as “unfortunate” during the Tuesday discussion.

He remarked that people now see him as someone who can make things disappear.

“What happened was quite unfortunate but I take it as an avenue for me to build a relationship with the young man that came,” Ikwechegh said.

“Today, we are friends. The case was taken to court but the court found no merit and it was struck out.

“The video that everybody saw was a low moment. I feel the sanctity of my home was being desecrated.

“People do not know what happened before my reaction. Like they say: action preempts reaction. Whatever anybody must have seen is not indicative of who I am.

“I have been in the public space for a very long time and there has never been a scandal about me.

“However, the young man is my friend now and I am very close to his bishop, his pastor and I’ve made a bunch of new friends and today the whole of Nigeria now knows me as the man that makes things to disappear. We’ve moved on, it’s in the past now.”
