EU Condemns Trump’s Tariffs, Warns of Retaliation

The European Union has strongly criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, vowing to respond firmly if the bloc itself becomes a target.

Until now, Brussels had hoped to avoid an outright trade war through negotiations. However, Trump’s latest remarks have dashed those hopes. On Friday, he not only defended his protectionist stance but made it clear that the EU could be next in line.

EU: Tariffs Harm Everyone

A European Commission spokesman did not mince words in condemning Washington’s move.

EU Condemns Trump’s Tariffs

“The European Union regrets the US decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China,” he stated. “Tariffs create unnecessary economic disruption and drive inflation. They are hurtful to all sides.”

While the US administration insists these measures are necessary to protect American industries, Brussels sees them as reckless and damaging to global economic stability.

EU’s Warning: Retaliation Will Follow

The EU is making it clear that it will not sit idly by if Trump extends his trade war to Europe.

“The EU will respond firmly to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods,” the spokesman warned.

For now, European exports remain untouched, but there is little confidence that will last. “At this time, we are not aware of any additional tariffs being imposed on EU products,” he added, signaling that Brussels is bracing for impact.

A Call for Trade Stability

Despite the escalating tensions, the EU remains committed to open markets and a rules-based global trade system. The spokesman reiterated that low tariffs are essential to economic growth and stability.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining a strong trade partnership with the US, which remains “the biggest in the world.”

“There is a lot at stake,” he added. “We should both be looking at strengthening this relationship.”

Bracing for a Trade War?

For now, the EU is watching and waiting. But if Trump follows through on his threats, Brussels has made one thing clear: retaliation will be swift and decisive.
