Donald Trump has stirred controversy again, claiming he had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine. The New York Post reported this as the first direct communication between Putin and a U.S. president since 2022. However, Trump refuses to disclose details, saying, “Better not say” when asked how many times they spoke. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov neither confirmed nor denied the report, adding to the mystery.

Is a Trump-Putin Summit on the Way?

Trump has repeatedly vowed to end the Ukraine war but has not provided a clear plan. He suggested that a meeting with Putin could be in the works, with reports indicating Saudi Arabia or the UAE as potential venues. Meanwhile, high-ranking U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, are heading to Europe for discussions on the conflict. Trump’s allies hint that economic pressure, including sanctions and tariffs, might be used to push Putin into negotiations.

Putin’s Demands: Will Ukraine Surrender Territory?

On June 14, Putin outlined his terms for ending the war: Ukraine must drop its NATO ambitions and withdraw from four regions occupied by Russian forces. While Putin appears open to discussions with Trump, he refuses to make any major territorial concessions. The Kremlin has been cautious about confirming any direct contact with Trump’s team, but Russian officials suggest that plans for a meeting are at an “advanced stage.”

What’s Next?

As the war rages on, Moscow continues its offensive, seizing more Ukrainian land. Trump, who previously claimed he spoke to Putin even after leaving office, is now positioning himself as the dealmaker. Will Trump’s secret talks lead to peace? The world is watching.
