In a significant boost of health care within Nigeria’s correctional facilities, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorized the recruitment of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to serve in correctional centers nationwide. Furthermore, medical doctors participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program will be deployed to these facilities.

This initiative directly addresses the critical need for improved healthcare services and aims to uphold the fundamental rights of inmates. To immediately alleviate staffing shortages, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) will extend the service of existing medical personnel beyond their retirement age.

Infrastructure Upgrades

The renovation of the Kuje Correctional Centre has been completed. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the facility as entirely modernized, encompassing improvements to cells, water supply, and hospital facilities. This upgrade reflects a broader commitment to improving conditions within correctional centers nationwide.

Strengthening National Security

President Tinubu’s commitment to national security is evident in the approval for a new National Paramilitary Academy. This degree-awarding institution, modeled after the Nigerian Defence Academy, will train citizens for paramilitary roles. Further bolstering security efforts, the visa application process has been fully digitized, enabling online applications and processing within 48 to 72 hours. Additionally, plans are underway to restructure the Private Guard sector using a new Guard Management System to automate operations and improve efficiency.

Conclusion

President Tinubu’s sweeping reforms demonstrate a clear commitment to improving both the well-being of inmates and the overall security of the nation. The initiatives announced, from enhanced healthcare in correctional facilities to the establishment of a National Paramilitary Academy and the modernization of security processes, represent a significant step towards a more secure and just society. These reforms are not merely short-term solutions but a foundational effort to build sustainable systems capable of enduring future challenges, as highlighted by Minister Tunji-Ojo.
