The Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group continues its offensive in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), ignoring international calls for a ceasefire. The group seized the Kavumu airport serving Bukavu, a major city in South Kivu province after Congolese forces and allied militias withdrew with minimal resistance. This brings the rebels to within 30km (19 miles) of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu. This latest advance follows last month’s seizure of Goma, the largest city in mineral-rich eastern DRC.

Bukavu Under Threat, Residents Fear Imminent Attack

Fighting in Congo has displaced hundreds of thousands in recent weeks, with Bukavu looking like the next stop for the rebel group. Residents are in panic and have been warned to remain indoors as the scourge of war nears their city. The Deputy Governor of South Kivu, Jean Elekano, told the reporters that heavy fighting was ongoing on the outskirts of Bukavu but insisted that the army was still in control and fighting back.

International Calls for Ceasefire

The African Union is calling for a ceasefire, AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat has warned that military action alone will not be enough to quell the crisis in Congo and that a ceasefire must be observed.

“There is a general mobilization of Africa today on this issue, and I hope that we will be able to impose this ceasefire,” he said.

The upcoming AU summit in Ethiopia will prioritize discussions on the escalating conflict and its implications.

Accusations of Rwandan Support and Escalating Tensions

Congo has persistently accused Rwanda of backing M23 rebels and even sending its own troops into Congolese territory, even though the Rwandan president has severally denied this. The Congolese government insists that Rwanda is attempting to illegally annex parts of its resource-rich territory. Meanwhile, Rwandan President Paul Kagame insists that his country’s priority is security, citing threats from Hutu rebel groups operating in eastern DRC. These conflicting narratives have intensified tensions between the two nations, raising the possibility of international sanctions against Rwanda.

Bottom Line

The M23 rebellion in eastern DRC continues to escalate despite international calls for a ceasefire, raising fears of further humanitarian crisis and regional instability. The accusations of Rwandan support for the rebels have significantly heightened tensions between Rwanda and the DRC. The international community faces a growing challenge in resolving the conflict and averting further suffering
