The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has strongly denied allegations that it sells substandard petrol with a high burn rate. The energy giant dismissed the claims as “baseless and entirely unfounded,” stating that its fuel meets strict industry standards.

The controversy began when a viral video surfaced online, showing a content creator comparing fuel from different sources. In the video, he claimed that petrol purchased at an NNPC station burned out faster than Dangote petrol from another filling station. According to him, the NNPC petrol lasted just 17 minutes in a power generator, while Dangote’s petrol ran for 33 minutes.

However, the NNPC has refuted these allegations, calling them “misleading” and warning that such misinformation would not be tolerated.

NNPC Addresses Viral Video and Fuel Efficiency Concerns

Reacting to the video, NNPCL’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, clarified that the petrol sold at NNPC stations in Lagos was sourced from the Dangote Refinery. He stated, “The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last.”

According to NNPC, the claims were based on unverified amateur research that lacked scientific backing. The company emphasized that its petrol is carefully formulated for “optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability.”

The company also highlighted that Dangote Refinery is a key supplier of petroleum products to NNPC stations.

“It is important to emphasize that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos, where this deceptive video was created is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security,” NNPC stated.

NNPC Warns Against False Allegations, Threatens Legal Action

The company went further to accuse economic saboteurs of spreading misinformation to damage its reputation.

“The misleading video represents yet another desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and tarnish NNPC’s reputation,” the statement read.

NNPC also warned that it would take legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about its brand and operations. “We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians,” it stressed.

The company urged the public to rely on verified sources for accurate information and assured Nigerians of its commitment to fuel availability, affordability, and quality.
