UN Says M23 Executed Children in Congo’s Bukavu

The UN human rights office has reported the horrifying execution of three children by the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These child executions occurred after the children wore weapons and uniforms left behind by the Congolese army. The UN has expressed grave alarm over this incident and other human rights violations committed by the M23 since their arrival in the city.

Children Executed by M23 After Donning Abandoned Military Gear

UN Human Rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani confirmed the summary executions of children by M23 rebels in Bukavu last week. The children were reportedly executed after they put on weapons and uniforms abandoned by the Congolese army as M23 forces entered the city.

M23 Reprisals Against Journalists and Civil Society

The UN also reported serious concerns for the safety of journalists, human rights defenders, and members of civil society organizations in Bukavu. These individuals are allegedly, seeking protection from potential reprisals by the M23 rebels. To this effect, the UN has called for the protection of civilians and the respect for human rights in the conflict-stricken region.
