A Life of Service and Advocacy

Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, Clark’s early education took him through primary and secondary schools in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene. He furthered his studies at the Government Teacher Training College, which later became Delta State University, Abraka. Initially a school teacher, Clark pursued a law degree abroad, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in public service.

Clark’s political journey commenced in the pre-independence era when he was elected as a councillor for Bomadi in 1953. He was an active member of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) and played a significant role in Nigeria’s independence movement. During the military regime, he served as the Federal Commissioner for Information in 1975 and held various positions, including Commissioner for Education and Finance in the former Midwestern State between 1968 and 1974. As Commissioner for Education, he was instrumental in establishing the Mid-West College of Technology, which laid the foundation for the University of Benin.

Beyond his governmental roles, Clark was a fervent advocate for the rights and development of the Niger Delta region. He founded PANDEF and co-led the South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), tirelessly championing justice, equality, and human rights. His dedication to education and community development was evident through the establishment of several institutions, including the Edwin Clark University in his hometown in 2015.

Tributes from Notable Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sadness over Clark’s passing, describing it as a “deeply sobering loss.” He acknowledged Clark’s illustrious life marked by dedicated service to the nation and his community, noting his passionate advocacy for resource control, economic, and environmental justice in the Niger Delta.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also mourned Clark’s death, highlighting the diminishing number of Nigeria’s patriotic leaders at a time when their wisdom and invaluable experience are critically needed. Obasanjo described Clark as a remarkable brother and friend, a distinguished lawyer, skilled economist, experienced administrator, accomplished politician, and a respected community leader. He praised Clark’s enduring love for his people and his vocal advocacy for the betterment of oil-bearing states in the country.

Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, paid a condolence visit to Clark’s family, reflecting on the elder statesman’s impactful service to the nation. Similarly, former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, and other notable figures, including Senators Seriake Dickson and James Manager, visited to offer their condolences.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described Clark as a patriot and a fearless fighter for an egalitarian society. He acknowledged Clark’s unwavering commitment to democracy and participatory governance, noting that he earned the admiration and affection of his people, transcending political boundaries and fostering friendships across ethnic divides.

PANDEF Pays Last Respect

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) mourned the loss of its leader, referring to Clark as a “mighty Iroko tree” that has fallen. The forum highlighted his relentless pursuit of a fair and equitable society and his significant contributions to the legal profession, education, and community development.

Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark’s legacy as a steadfast advocate for justice, equality, and the development of the Niger Delta region remains indelible. His life’s work continues to inspire leaders and citizens across Nigeria.
