Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has eased the curfew imposed on Ifon and Ilobu communities after months of tension over a lingering boundary dispute. The curfew, initially set from 7 pm to 7 am on January 16, 2025, was aimed at curbing violent clashes between the two communities.

However, following notable improvements in security and stability, the government has revised the restriction period to 10 pm to 4 am, effective immediately.

Government’s Commitment to Lasting Peace

The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. Kolapo Alimi. In the statement, Governor Adeleke commended security agencies and local stakeholders for their efforts in restoring order. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring lasting peace in the affected areas.

To further secure the towns, the governor directed that a 24-hour security surveillance be maintained in both Ifon and Ilobu. Personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police, and Civil Defence Corps will continue to enforce law and order to prevent any resurgence of violence.

Call for Cooperation and Unity

Governor Adeleke urged all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents, to cooperate with the state government in achieving a peaceful resolution. He also encouraged the communities to use the ongoing holy month of Ramadan as an opportunity to pray for unity and lasting peace.

He issued a stern warning against any attempts to disrupt the peace process, emphasizing that anyone found inciting violence or causing unrest would face the full weight of the law.

Long-standing Land Dispute and Government Mediation

The cause of the crisis between Ifon and Ilobu is a long-standing conflict fueled by land ownership disputes, which have led to intermittent clashes over the years. The Osun State government has remained actively involved in mediating between the two communities, working toward a permanent resolution.

Conclusion

The decision to relax the curfew reflects the progress made in restoring peace, but the situation remains delicate. Governor Adeleke’s continued security measures and emphasis on cooperation signal a firm stance against further violence. Moving forward, sustained dialogue and community engagement will be crucial in preventing future conflicts and fostering long-term stability in Ifon and Ilobu.
