The Trump administration has introduced a new app, “CBP Home”, designed to allow undocumented immigrants in the United States to “self-deport” voluntarily rather than face potential arrest and detention.
The app, launched by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), includes a feature enabling users to signal their “intent to depart,” reinforcing President Donald Trump’s aggressive deportation policies.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized the app’s purpose, saying,
“The CBP Home app gives aliens the option to leave now and self-deport, so they may still have the opportunity to return legally in the future and live the American dream. If they don’t, we will find them, we will deport them, and they will never return.”
Trump’s Push for Record Deportations Intensifies
President Trump, a Republican, has vowed to deport record numbers of undocumented immigrants during his administration. While his initial deportation numbers in fiscal year 2024 lagged behind the monthly average under Democrat Joe Biden, Trump’s policies have focused on long-term undocumented residents rather than recent border crossers.
The “CBP Home” app is part of a broader strategy to pressure undocumented immigrants to leave the U.S. voluntarily. Another Trump administration regulation, set to take effect on April 11, will require individuals without legal status to register with the federal government or face fines and jail time.
The new “CBP Home” app replaces “CBP One”, a program launched under the Biden administration. The Biden-era app allowed approximately one million migrants in Mexico to schedule appointments for legal entry at U.S. border crossings. Republicans criticized the program, arguing that it facilitated mass migration without proper vetting.
Hours after taking office, President Trump shut down “CBP One”, leaving many migrants with pending appointments stranded and unsure about their next steps.
Controversy Surrounds Self-Deportation Strategy
The introduction of “CBP Home” has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that the app and its related policies were creating fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities.
But Trump’s supporters, however, view it as a necessary step to enforce immigration laws and reduce the number of undocumented individuals in the country.
