The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has pledged to address the complaint filed by Nigerian Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of unlawful suspension and sexual harassment.

Speaking at the Women in Parliament session at the United Nations in New York, Akpoti-Uduaghan delivered an emotional appeal for justice, calling on global democratic institutions to intervene in her case.

The suspended senator described her six-month suspension from Nigeria’s Senate as “unlawful” and an act of injustice, urging the IPU to take action.

IPU President Tulia Ackson Promises Fair Hearing

In response to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s complaint, IPU President Tulia Ackson assured that the organization would follow its standard procedures by listening to both sides before taking further steps.

Ackson emphasized the importance of fairness, stating, “We have heard her concerns, and as an institution, we will take the concerns raised, not only from her side but also by giving a chance to listen to the other side.”

Ackson acknowledged that time constraints prevented a Nigerian delegate from addressing the session but confirmed that the IPU would handle the matter with due diligence.

Senator Natasha’s Allegations Against Akpabio

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s complaint centers on her suspension from the Nigerian Senate and allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. She argued that her suspension was politically motivated and violated her rights as an elected official.

The senator’s appeal to the IPU highlights the challenges faced by women in politics, particularly in addressing issues of harassment and unfair treatment. Her case has drawn significant attention, both domestically and internationally, as a test of accountability and justice within democratic institutions.

IPU’s Commitment to Addressing Parliamentary Concerns

The IPU, a global organization of national parliaments, is known for its role in promoting democracy, human rights, and gender equality. Ackson reiterated the IPU’s commitment to addressing concerns raised by parliamentarians, stating, “We will be working on them, of course, having listened to the other side, and we will be able to take steps after that.”

The organization’s approach ensures that all parties involved are given a fair opportunity to present their cases, maintaining the integrity of its processes.

Why It Matters

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case has thrown light on the the broader challenges of gender equality and accountability in Nigerian politics. Her suspension and allegations against Akpabio have led to hot debates online and offline, about the treatment of women in leadership roles and the need for stronger mechanisms to address harassment and injustice.

The IPU’s involvement could set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, both in Nigeria and globally.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s courage in bringing her case to the IPU has been widely praised, with several Nigerian women hoping it will inspire other women to speak out against injustice.
