Primark CEO Steps Down Following Workplace Conduct Allegations

Paul Marchant has stepped down as Primark CEO with immediate effect after an external investigation into allegations about his conduct in a social setting.

Parent company Associated British Foods (ABF) stated that Marchant fully cooperated with the probe conducted by independent lawyers, acknowledging his “error of judgement” and accepting his actions failed to meet corporate behavioral standards.

The complaint, raised by a female colleague regarding inappropriate behavior, prompted ABF’s swift response in what analysts describe as a defining moment for corporate accountability in retail leadership.

Primark CEO Steps Down Following Workplace Conduct Allegations

The ABF Chief Executive George Weston expressed profound disappointment in a public statement, stressing that “colleagues and others must be treated with respect and dignity.”

The FTSE 100 conglomerate, which derives almost half its £20bn annual revenue from Primark’s fast-fashion empire, saw shares tumble 4% to £18.64 following the announcement. Weston emphasized ABF’s commitment to maintaining “high standards of integrity” as fundamental to long-term business success, while confirming ongoing support for the complainant who raised concerns through proper channels.

ABF Appoints New Leadership Team After Merchant’s Departure

With Marchant’s abrupt departure after 14 years leading Primark, ABF has appointed Finance Director Eoin Tonge as interim CEO while Financial Controller Joana Edwards assumes Tonge’s previous role. The company expressed confidence in both executives’ capabilities during this transitional period. This leadership shuffle comes as Primark navigates ambitious international expansion plans following its successful penetration of European and North American markets under Marchant’s tenure, growing from a UK high street staple to a £9.4bn global fast-fashion powerhouse.

The outgoing CEO, who previously held leadership roles at Debenhams, Topman, and New Look before succeeding Primark founder Arthur Ryan in 2009, leaves during a pivotal phase for the budget retailer.

Industry observers have taken note of the challenge ahead for interim leadership in maintaining Primark’s market position amid growing competition from online fast-fashion rivals. The conduct investigation’s resolution demonstrates ABF’s increasing focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) priorities as consumer and investor expectations evolve regarding corporate responsibility in the retail sector.
