Four persons have been apprehended by officials of the Lagos State Government for allegedly urinating on the Kodesoh Bridge in Ikeja.

The arrests, which form part of the state’s ongoing clampdown on open defecation and efforts to improve environmental hygiene, were made around 8:30pm on Friday by the Lagos State Anti-Open Defecation Task Force during a night-time operation.

Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the development in a statement posted via his official X handle on Saturday.

Four Arrested For Violating Sanitation Laws In Lagos

“During late night monitoring and enforcement today by the Lagos State Anti-Open Defecation team, 4 individuals were arrested urinating on Kodesoh Bridge in Ikeja at about 8.30pm,” Wahab wrote.

The suspects are currently being held at the office of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps in Bolade, Oshodi, and are expected to face charges in accordance with the state’s environmental regulations.

Wahab stressed that the government has zero tolerance for environmental abuse, warning that similar operations will continue across the state until residents comply with hygiene and sanitation standards.

In a similar development, the commissioner also gave an update on the ongoing clean-up at the Oja Oba underbridge in the Adeniji Adele area of Lagos Island.

He said the exercise, now in its third day, has exposed the large-scale dumping of refuse in the area, describing the situation as alarming.

“The volume of refuse being evacuated is overwhelming — a clear indication of misuse of public infrastructure,” Wahab noted.

“While the scale of the waste suggests it may take up to 10 days to fully clear, we remain undeterred. Our goal is to reclaim this space for safe and proper public use, and to send a strong message that such abuse of shared spaces will no longer be tolerated in our city.”

He further appealed to residents to cooperate with the government in ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment, urging everyone to take collective responsibility for maintaining public spaces.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement of sanitation laws, warning that violators will be dealt with according to the law.
