Girlies, let’s be honest with ourselves: that favorite lipstick from 2023 or the mascara you’ve been squeezing every last drop from might be costing you much more than you realize.

Using expired makeup doesn’t only just mean lackluster results—it can lead to skin irritation, infections, and even long-term damage too. NAFDAC doesn’t require expiration dates on cosmetics, meaning that most consumers are pretty much left in the dark about when to toss their products.

Bacteria and mold thrive in creamy and liquid formulas, with studies showing that 70% of women use products well past their prime. Eye infections from old mascara, cystic acne from rancid foundation, and allergic reactions from oxidized powders are just some risks of clinging to your beauty stash too long.

Thankfully, this article is here to inform you of when to discard that makeup product you’ve been hoarding. Read along to know just when to do it

The Shelf Life of Every Makeup Product

1. Liquid Foundation & Concealer: (6-12 months)

Once opened, water-based formulas become breeding grounds for bacteria. Look for separation, strange odors, or texture changes as clear warning signs. Pump bottles/containers last longer than jars since they minimize air exposure.

2. Mascara & Liquid Eyeliner: (3-6 months)

The moist, dark environment of mascara tubes is perfect for bacterial growth—including staph. If your mascara gets flaky or smells like gasoline, bin it immediately. Pro tip: Write the opening date with a Sharpie!

3. Lipstick & Lip Gloss: (1-2 years)

While wax-based bullets last longer, the oils in lip products turn rancid. That weird chemical smell or waxy texture means it’s time to say goodbye as much as we may hate to. Glosses with doe-foot applicators spoil faster (6-12 months).

4. Powder Products: (2-3 years)

Pressed powders and blushes last longest but harbor bacteria in brushes. If you see a hard pan (a waxy film) or the color fades, it’s lost its effectiveness. Spray with 70% alcohol monthly to disinfect.

5. Skincare-Makeup Hybrids: (6 months)

CC creams, SPF foundations, and vitamin-infused products degrade fastest. The active ingredients (like sunscreen) become ineffective, making them useless for protection.

5 Warning Signs Your Makeup Has Turned

1. The Sniff Test

That chemical or sour milk smell means bacterial growth. Trust your nose—if it’s off, throw it away.

2. Texture Changes

Clumping mascara, separated foundation, or gritty eyeliner are screaming for retirement.

3. Color Shifts

Oxidized foundation turning orange or lipstick developing white spots means chemical breakdown.

4. Irritation

Burning, itching, or breakouts after application? Your product has likely expired.

5. Performance Issues

If your blush won’t blend or mascara flakes instantly, the formula is past its prime.

When To Ditch Your Makeup: All You Need to Know About Product Expiration & Safety

How to Extend Your Makeup’s Life (Smart Storage Hacks)

i. Refrigerate It: Cream-based products such as lipsticks reportedly last 25% longer when chilled (just avoid freezing it).

ii. Wash Your Tools: Dirty brushes introduce bacteria weekly. Clean them biweekly with castile soap.

iii. Avoid “Double Dipping”: Putting your fingers directly into product jars transfers bacteria. The solution? opt for spatulas to avoid cross contamination.

iv. Keep It Dry: Humid bathrooms degrade products fastest. To avoid this, store makeup in a cool, dark drawer.

When to Break the Rules (The Only Exceptions)

  • Unopened Products: Sealed makeup lasts 2-3 years past its production date (check the batch code).
  • Powders You Sanitize: Spritzing with alcohol can revive older eye shadows if they manage to pass the smell/texture test.
  • Sentimental Items: Keep that wedding lipstick as a memento—just don’t ever wear it again.
