Nou Camp breaks women’s football attendance record

The Uefa Women’s Champions League game between Barcelona Femeni and Real Madrid ladies broke the attendance record in women’s football as 91,553 fans witnessed the team reach the UWCL semi-final. 

Barcelona Femeni came from 2-1 down to defeat arch rivals Real Madrid 5-2 on Wednesday night at Camp Nou. The game ended 8-3 on aggregate after they already beat Real Madrid ladies 3-1 in the first leg of the encounter. They will now face either Wolfsburg or Arsenal in the semi-final round.

The previous turnout record was 60,749 in 2019, and it was the game was between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid which saw the Femeni triumph over the Atletico ladies at the Wanda Metropolitano. 

The Wednesday game at Camp Nou also broke the record for fans’ presence at any international women’s sport event. The record was set back in 2012 at Wembley when United States defeated Japan 2-1 to clinch Olympic gold medal at London Olympics.

Tonight’s game saw Alexia Putellas, the Ballon d’Or holder and her teammates established their El Clasico right as they swept aside the Real Madrid ladies with a dominant display. Thanks to second half goals from the likes of Claudia Pina, Aitana Bonmati and Caroline Hansen.

They will wait to see the winner between Wolfsburg and Arsenal. Wolfsburg will host the The 2007 winner at the Volkswagen Arena on Thursday evening. The first leg encounter between these two ended in a one whole draw.
