The United States has announced a significant reduction of $50 million in its annual aid to Zambia’s health sector.

This decision comes as a direct consequence of the Zambian government’s failure to effectively address what the US has described as “systemic theft” of donated medicines and essential medical supplies.

Michael Gonzales, the US ambassador to Zambia, stated that this aid cut is a separate action from the broader review of foreign aid being finalized by the administration.

Ambassador Gonzales expressed his disappointment in revealing that, since 2021, the US has uncovered widespread and “systemic theft of life-saving medicines and other products” intended for free distribution to the Zambian public.

He specifically noted that the stolen medicines included crucial antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV, a significant health concern in Zambia.

Zambia Acknowledges Medicine Theft, Begins Forensic Audit

Zambia’s health ministry responded to the US announcement with a statement acknowledging the concerns raised by the US ambassador. The ministry admitted that the recurrent theft of medicines has been a “persistent challenge” predating 2021.

Following notification of the issue, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema reportedly commissioned an independent forensic audit of the entire medicines supply chain within the country.

The Zambian health ministry further stated that a number of officials found to have been implicated in the medicine theft have been either removed from their positions or suspended.

Additionally, some individuals have been arrested and are scheduled to appear in court to face charges related to the theft of medical supplies.

Despite the significant reduction in US aid, Zambia’s health ministry sought to reassure the public that the nation currently maintains sufficient stocks of essential medicines.

This includes antiretroviral drugs, antimalarial medications, and other critical drugs, with no immediate risk of shortages anticipated.

US to Provide Ongoing Technical and Logistics Support to Zambia

Beyond January 2026, the US will continue to offer technical and logistical assistance to Zambia. This ongoing support will focus on humanitarian activities and efforts to prevent drug resistance and the transmission of diseases within the country, even as direct financial aid for medicine procurement is reduced.
