The Chinese government has slammed the United States for distorting historical facts and attacking China’s political system, following Washington’s remarks commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing described the U.S. statement as “a serious interference” in China’s internal affairs.

Foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian announced on Wednesday that China had formally lodged a diplomatic complaint, describing the U.S. position as “misleading and disrespectful.” He added, “The United States must stop using so-called human rights as a tool to smear other countries while ignoring its own record.”

China Condemns U.S. Remarks on Tiananmen Anniversary

The dispute was triggered after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a strong statement on Tuesday, marking the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen crackdown. “Today we commemorate the bravery of the Chinese people who were killed as they tried to exercise their fundamental freedoms,” Rubio said. “The CCP actively tries to censor the facts, but the world will never forget.”

His words were swiftly condemned by Beijing, which insists that its handling of the protests was necessary to maintain national stability. While the Chinese government has never released an official death toll, international rights groups say thousands may have died during the military operation to quash the protests.

China Accuses U.S. of Interference Over Tiananmen Comments

Beijing views foreign statements on Tiananmen as a direct challenge to the Communist Party’s rule. In China, public discussion of the events remains tightly censored, and authorities routinely silence those who attempt to commemorate the victims.

Lin Jian warned the U.S. to refrain from “politicizing human rights” and accused Washington of having “double standards.” He also emphasized that “any attempt to use Tiananmen to sow discord inside China will fail.”

Despite China’s efforts to suppress memory of the incident, the Tiananmen anniversary remains a symbol of resistance globally, especially among Chinese communities abroad.

China Slams U.S. Over Tiananmen Statement in Fresh War of Words

The confrontation between China and the United States over the Tiananmen statement has once again exposed deep tensions between the two countries on issues of history, freedom, and diplomacy. As China slams U.S. over Tiananmen statement, the narrative continues to reflect a world increasingly divided over how history should be remembered—and who gets to tell it.
