The Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Akure, is preparing to deliver its verdict on the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Agboola Ajayi. The petition contests the outcome of the November 16, 2024, governorship election, which declared Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner.

Ajayi and the PDP allege that the election was tainted by irregularities and have demanded the cancellation of the results. The tribunal, led by Justice Benson Ogubu, is now expected to rule on whether these claims are substantial enough to overturn the declared result.

Ajayi Challenges Aiyedatiwa’s Win at Ondo Tribunal

Aiyedatiwa secured a landslide victory in the election, winning all 18 local government areas and polling a total of 366,781 votes. His victory was officially announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), but the PDP maintains that the process was deeply flawed.

Agboola Ajayi, a former deputy governor of the state, insists that the will of the people was subverted. His legal team is pushing for a cancellation of the results and, potentially, a fresh election.

The PDP petition has been joined by those from other political parties, including the Social Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples’ Movement, and the African Alliance. They are united in their demand that the election process be thoroughly scrutinized and, if necessary, invalidated.

Tribunal’s Judgment May Reshape Ondo’s Political Landscape

With the tribunal set to pronounce its judgment, political tension in the state is rising. If the tribunal rules in favour of Ajayi, it could lead to a major political shake-up and a new election.

However, if the panel upholds Aiyedatiwa’s victory, it would further cement the APC’s dominance in the state.

This legal contest has drawn nationwide attention, especially as political watchers debate the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral processes and the effectiveness of the judiciary in handling election disputes.

The Ondo tribunal’s judgment will not only decide the fate of the 2024 election result, it will also test the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

All eyes are now on the Ondo tribunal as it prepares to deliver judgment on Ajayi’s petition against Aiyedatiwa. Whether the tribunal upholds the current administration or orders a new election, its decision will have lasting implications for electoral integrity and democratic accountability in Ondo State.
