The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday in celebration of Nigeria’s annual Democracy Day. The announcement came through the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Sunday.

This year marks 26 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria, a milestone the minister described as one of resilience and hope. The statement, signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, emphasized the need to uphold truth, justice, and peace in Nigeria’s evolving democratic journey.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians and called June 12 a symbolic date that reflects the country’s determination to uphold democratic values.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured,” he said.

The minister added that Nigeria’s 26-year streak of civil rule proves the people’s strength and perseverance. He acknowledged that while democracy remains a work in progress, the country is on a path that allows space for improvement.

Tunji-Ojo also reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to democratic governance. He stated that the Renewed Hope agenda is grounded in the principles of freedom and accountability, and rests on the people’s right to determine their political, social, and economic systems.

He assured the public that the federal government will continue to protect and strengthen these values. The minister urged citizens to reflect on the sacrifices that brought Nigeria to this point, and to work toward a future that respects the collective will of the people.
