Chinwendu Ihezuo was the scorer of the decisive goal with which Nigeria defeated Botswana 1–0 on Thursday and thus the Super Falcons have secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
In a nerve-wracking Group B match at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, Ihezuo took a brilliant pass from Esther Okoronkwo in the 89th minute and she calmly beat the Botswana goalie, Maitumelo Bosija, to obtain three points for Nigeria.
Botswana came out with a bright start, Refilwe Tholakele made a double save by Chiamaka Nnadozie in the opening stages. Nevertheless, the Mares rapidly went back deeply in defense and this frustrated Nigeria’s attacking quartet of Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, Toni Payne, and Rinsola Babajide for most of the match.
Ashley Plumptre and Payne wasted good chances in the first half, while Ihezuo and substitute Jennifer Echegini got no goal in the second half as the defence of Botswana was tough and strong all the time.
The very last moment was Ihezuo’s moment of glory as her effort was the winning one in the game’s final moments.
Nigeria lead Group B after winning their two games and proceed to the next stage. Their last group match is against Algeria on Sunday.
