Liverpool Football Club have also confirmed that they will no longer use the number 20 shirt as a token of their love and tribute to Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident along with his brother, Andre Silva, on July 3 in Spain.

The club has made a decision that is a break with their tradition as they comfortably dive into their 133-years plane of existence period to make the number permanently unused not only in the first teams but also in the junior sectors.

Jota, who chose Liverpool over others after his time with Wolves in 2020, has been the figure that the club is still thanking in all the aspects. In the transfers from 2020 to 2025, he collected 65 goals and 26 assists, and he was among the top players of Liverpool’s squad that along the years have clinched numerous trophies, including the 2024–25 Premier League trophy.

Liverpool CEO Michael Edwards took it to the next level by saying the club has made “a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.” The choice was made after talking with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family.

“We are giving up the number for a while, but it is forever that it will be given to no one else,” Edwards went on to say.

Jota, who was happily seen in the number 20 shirt, will not only be remembered for his footballing skills but also for the heartfelt relationships that he formed with the teammates, staff, and fans.
