Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recieived the Nigeria’s Women’s Football team, the Super Falcons on Monday openly, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after their historic win at Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 in Morocco.

The President presented each of the players with National honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Tinubu further announced that each player is entitled to a three-bedroom flat and ₦153 million ($100,000) while the coaching staff will get ₦76 million ($50,000) apart from the rewards.

“You have made our nation the most proud. Your determination and bravery are a source of inspiration to myriads,” Tinubu, who was referring to the tense final against hosts Morocco, said. “You have rekindled the flame of hope in our girls and re-energized us on what can be achieved.”

Captain of the team Rasheedat Ajibade, who received the most valuable player award of the tournament, along with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, presented the trophy. The players also chanted “On your mandate we shall stand” to show their gratitude for the support they have received.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu lauded Falcons’ effort and stated that “You have reassured the little girls all over Africa that they can realize their dreams with hard work and teamwork.”

Moreover, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced that all the 36 governors had agreed to give each player ₦10 million as a gift.

Earlier at Abuja airport, the Falcons were given a grand welcome with a water cannon salute and traditional performances. Government officials including Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, acknowledged the team’s spirit of fighting and goof attitude.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris congratulated the victory and called it “a strong symbol of Nigeria’s resilience and unity,” reaffirming the government’s commitment to invest in sports.
“Champions of Africa, welcome home!” was his announcement.
