On Sunday at the Singapore Grand Prix, George Russell triumphed thereby giving Mercedes their first win this season. Besides him, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris rounded off the podium. However, the attention was on McLaren who achieved the Constructors’ Championship with six races still to go – the same as Red Bull in 2023.
McLaren got 27 points from Lando Norris’ podium and Oscar Piastri’s fourth place, which was enough for them to lift the team trophy for the second time running and for the 10th time in total. Besides that, the intra-team Drivers’ Championship fight between the two intensified with Piastri’s advantage over Norris decreasing to 22 points.
Russell stayed in control from the pole and managed to keep Verstappen at bay after the start. Norris completed a spectacular move on Piastri and Kimi Antonelli, which instantly got the ire of his team-mate but the stewards declared the incident to be ‘fair’.
Due to the cramped nature of the Marina Bay circuit, it was next to impossible to overtake and that is why the top order remained the same after the pit stops. Charles Leclerc from Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton completed the top six, while Antonelli really impressed with his fifth-place finish.
Under the hot sun which was considered Formula 1’s very first “Heat Hazard” race, McLaren heralded their early supremacy and sealed their dual championship hold well before the last race of the season.
