Starmer Jeered: Prime Minister Labeled 'Traitor' in London

The Loophole Thousands Are Using to Enter the UK – And Why the Government Is Panicking

The UK government is in a state of panic as a massive immigration loophole has been exposed, with tens of thousands of foreign students allegedly using the visa system as a fraudulent backdoor to claim asylum and vanish into the country after their studies conclude.

Indo-Pacific Minister Seema Malhotra revealed the shocking scale of the crisis, admitting that a staggering 16,000 international students applied for asylum last year, with another 14,800 following suit in the first half of 2025 alone. This systematic “abuse of legal routes” has forced the government to roll out draconian new rules, including making some migrants wait up to 20 years for permanent settlement, a desperate move that has triggered warnings of an exodus of crucial nurses and care workers.

Despite Malhotra’s insistence that the UK “welcomes those coming legally,” the numbers tell a different story: the system is being exploited so brazenly that it has “undermined public confidence” and forced a total overhaul. The situation is so dire that the government is now working with universities to act as de facto immigration officers, tasked with policing whether students are “genuine.”

The Loophole Thousands Are Using to Enter the UK - And Why the Government Is Panicking

Why It Matters

Let’s call this what it is: a flagship policy in complete collapse. The student visa scheme hasn’t just been abused; it’s been transformed into a legalized asylum-shopping pipeline, and the government was caught napping until tens of thousands had already exploited it. Their solution—punishing all migrants with 20-year settlement waits—is the political equivalent of using a sledgehammer to swat a fly, and it will cripple the NHS and care sector in the process.

The government isn’t just “sending a strong message”; it’s admitting it lost control of its borders years ago. By making universities the new border guards, they’re outsourcing their failure. This is now a panic-stricken overcorrection that reveals a government so terrified by its own immigration statistics it’s willing to sabotage the economy and its international reputation to get a grip.
