Surviving the December Price Surge: Your Soft Life Budget Guide
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

December in Nigeria (Lagos especially) is a lesson on inflation and playing it smart. As the parties multiply and the diaspora (the IJGBs) arrive, the cost of everything—from a simple ride-hailing trip to securing a tailor’s services—skyrockets. The annual December Price Surge is real, threatening to deplete your account long before the new year.

The goal isn’t to be stingy; it’s to maintain a “Soft Life Budget”—to enjoy the season fully without entering January broke. Here is your honest guide to managing the dramatic seasonal inflation for essential services.

1. For Ride-Hailing & Transportation:

Transportation costs are often the biggest unexpected drain in December due to back-to-back events, gridlock, and rampant surge pricing.

  • The Early Bird Rule: Surge pricing is highest during peak party hours (7 PM – 10 PM) and late exit hours (1 AM – 3 AM). If possible, leave for events slightly earlier than the crowd, and if you can, leave before midnight to secure better rates.
  • Embrace the Waiting Game: When surge hits 2x or 3x, wait 5-10 minutes before re-checking the app. The prices often drop slightly after the initial rush subsides. This is no guarantee that the price will drop though but it’s worth giving a try.
  • The Shared Ride Hack: For non-urgent trips, consider using ride-sharing features (if available and safe) or pre-arranging carpooling with friends going to the same venue. Splitting a fare, even during a slight surge, is always cheaper than paying a triple surge alone.
  • Leverage Local Alternatives: For short, non-traffic-heavy distances, consider using commercial buses, which often have fixed, non-surge fares.

2. For Essential Services (The Tailor, MUA, and Stylist Inflation)

The demand for glamour makes beauty and fashion services the second biggest source of budget shock. Prices for these services can inflate by 50% to 100% from November to December.

  • The November Deadline: This is the most crucial tip: secure your tailor and hairstylist in November. Any Aso-Ebi or custom party garment should be dropped off with your tailor no later than the first week of December. Tailors charge exorbitant rush fees for any work accepted after this deadline.
  • The MUA Block Booking: If you have multiple events, do not book your makeup artist (MUA) for single appointments. Negotiate a block booking rate for 3 or more full faces. This gives the MUA guaranteed work and gives you a significant discount per session.
  • Go Pro on Simple Looks: Invest in a single professional makeup lesson in November. This allows you to master one or two signature looks (e.g., a flawless base, a defined brow) and only pay for a professional MUA for your biggest, most photographed events (like your best friend’s wedding).

3. For Domestic Travel & Accommodation:

For those traveling between states or hosting friends, prices for flights and short-term rentals are punishingly high.

  • The Flight Trap: Domestic flight prices peak from December 15th to December 30th. If you must travel during this window, book your tickets immediately. Even better: if your schedule permits, travel on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day, as fares are often slightly lower due to lower demand.
  • Accommodation Splits: If hosting or traveling with a group, avoid individual hotel bookings. Secure a short-term serviced apartment or rental (like Airbnb/Booking.com) and split the cost equally. A good rental split is significantly cheaper per person than a mid-range hotel room during the peak season.

The “Soft Life” Budget: How to Track Your Spending

Successfully surviving the surge means establishing a dedicated “Enjoyment Fund” and sticking to it.

  • The 30% Rule: Allocate a maximum of 30% of your total December expenditure specifically for social and entertainment activities (event tickets, dining out, gifts). Once this fund is depleted, the “Soft Life” continues, but the spending stops.
  • Swap Pricey Gifting for Presence: Rather than attempting to buy expensive gifts during the peak retail frenzy, focus on gifts of time or support. Offer to pay for a friend’s MUA at one event or organize a high-effort, low-cost dinner party. Your presence over the price tag is sometimes the ultimate Soft Life flex.
  • The January Buffer: Always mentally calculate what your bank account will look like on January 5th. Knowing you have a solid buffer for the first week of the new year—when services are still inflated, and bills are due—is the best guarantee against the post-holiday financial crash.

The December Price Surge is a guarantee, but financial distress doesn’t have to be. By moving your key bookings to November, utilizing ride-sharing hacks, and strictly tracking your enjoyment fund, you can truly enjoy the month and step into the new year with a stable account and zero regret.
