The UCL League phase has ended, and the final standings shows diisapointment and excitement. For the second time, the new format has shown the teams that have been consistent, and exposed those who haven’t, and brought genuine excitement across Europe.

Standing strong at the top is the North London Club, Arsenal, who were simply magnificent. Mikel Arteta’s team triumphed in all eight of their games, netted 23 goals, and conceded just four goals, and completed the season having both the best attack and defence in the tournament. This combination of technical skills and mental toughness not only demonstrated how strong the Arsenal squad is but also served to establish the Gunners as one of the top contenders in the game with the present squad, rather than being aspirants to the title.

Champions‍‌‍‍‌ League League Phase Verdict: Arsenal Shine as Giants Stumble in New-Format Reality Check

Besides the obvious headliners, a couple of very impressive tales were revealed. Qarabag earned the right to play in the relegation matches even though they were massively beaten (6-0) by Liverpool at Anfield during the last match, while Benfica achieved qualification in a dramatic manner with a goalkeeper’s last-minute header from Anatoliy Trubin. Club Brugge should be applauded for their 3-0 triumph over Marseille, which dashed the hopes of Roberto De Zerbi’s team of even reaching the top 24.

Looking at the numbers, the league phase has further established the Premier League’s dominance over the other leagues. Among the eight teams that automatically qualified for the next round, there are 5 English teams among them, while Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Sporting rounded up the top eight. While Top league like the Italian Serie A have no representatives among the top eight.

Another Shocking feat was that another North London team, Tottenham, managed to finish fourth in the table. Especially considering their domestic situation, the Spurs managed to deliver results and play with quality sufficiently to qualify through their group. Sporting also did a lot better than many expected them to, as they managed to avoid the trap laid out by a very tough schedule and finished seventh, while Bodo/Glimt became one of the most attractive stories in the tournament by qualifying for the play-offs against the odds.

Nevertheless, some so-called “Big Teams “ failed to deliver; teams like Real Madrid and PSG were unable to finish in the top eight, While Seria A champions Napoli face early elimination.
