Manchester United kept up their excellent run of form under caretaker manager Michael Carrick with a 2-0 home win in a Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur, thus creating more problems for Spurs’ boss Thomas Frank.
The visitors looked dangerous at first when Conor Gallagher didn’t quite manage to get a proper touch to Xavi Simons’ lofted pass, but soon United were in charge of the game.
Matheus Cunha barely angled his shot out of the goal before Bruno Fernandes also had a go as United gradually took over the game. Spurs’ situation even get worse as CristianRomero was shown a red card for a reckless tackle on Casemiro.
United capitalized on the one-man advantage and took the lead. It came off a corner routine that Bryan Mbeumo finished after a nice one-two with Kobbie Mainoo. Red Devils kept pressing for another goal before the interval, but the efforts of Casemiro and Amad Diallo were thwarted by the keeper Guglielmo Vicario, who was keen to keep the score at a decent level.
Fernandes was sure he had grabbed the second goal for his side soon after the changes, but Amad’s goal was disallowed for offside. Late in the day, United finally put the issue beyond doubt with the winner arriving when Fernandes finished off Diogo Dalot’s cross at the far post.
This victory moves United further up to the top four, and on the other hand, the painful domestic run of form of Tottenham (they now have a winless streak of 8 matches) sees them stuck in the bottom half of the table.
