Manchester City sealed a historic domestic double with an overwhelming 4-0 victory over Brighton in the Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.
Already crowned Women’s Super League champions, City demonstrated why they are the league’s best by brushing aside Brighton despite the valiant effort of a spirited Brighton team that missed good early chances.
Having reached their first-ever final at the home of football, the Seagulls came flying out of the blocks and tested both Fran Kirby and Kiko Seike with fine chances, but both failed to convert.
They would be made to rue those missed opportunities in the mid-point of the first half as a recently rewarded contract saw the arrival of Jamaican international Khadija Shaw add the opening goal for the Sky Blues. She managed to get above the defence to reach Alex Greenwood’s well-placed cross and place a header beyond the grasp of keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Greenwood then added to Brighton’s pain with a stunning free-kick just before the half-hour break that surprised both keeper and defence and gave Andre Jeglertz’s side a strong footing to take into the second half.
Brighton did not recover in the second half as City continued to dominate and extended their lead with Aoba Fujino’s deflected shot adding a third goal before Vivianne Miedema completed the annihilation with a neat header.
The win gave City a record fourth Women’s FA Cup and their first since 2020, which added to their WSL trophy and sealed a phenomenal season.
