Following major primary victories where democratic socialist challengers kicked out long-standing traditional Democrats, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani openly mocked a new anti-socialist document written by worried party leaders.
Big Wins for Democratic Socialists in New York
Two progressive candidates heavily backed by Mayor Mamdani won massive upsets, defeating incumbent Congressmen Adriano Espaillat and Dan Goldman. By ousting these powerful, traditional politicians, voters in the nation’s largest city sent a clear message that they want a major shift to the left.
In response, establishment Democrats tried to push back. A group of moderate lawmakers, including New Jersey Representative Josh Gottheimer, quickly signed a new political “manifesto.” This document firmly ties the Democratic Party to capitalism and rejects socialism, arguing that far-left policies will lose national elections in November.
Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” Mayor Mamdani literally laughed off the document. “I’m not interested in writing a manifesto or, frankly, in reading one,” Mamdani told interviewer Jonathan Karl. He joked that the moderate document sounded like outdated political paranoia, adding that voters care about real-world results rather than empty paperwork.

My Opinion
Democrats are panicking, and they should be. For years, party bosses have treated progressives and democratic socialists like annoying visitors who should be seen but not heard. They continuously repeat the stale talking point that socialist ideas cannot win real elections.
But New York just proved that theory completely wrong. You cannot look at the defeat of established leaders like Goldman and Espaillat and pretend everything is normal. Moderate Democrats are trying to draw a line in the sand with their pro-capitalism manifesto, but it looks incredibly weak. While establishment politicians are busy writing essays defending the status quo, the socialist wing of the party is actually winning votes by offering desperate working-class people real solutions to their daily struggles.
Defending the Socialist Agenda
During his television interview, Mayor Mamdani pointed to his own success in New York over the last six months as proof that socialist ideas work. He argued that practical, affordable programs are exactly what everyday Americans are looking for.
Mamdani highlighted several major changes his administration has achieved.
1. Free Childcare: For the first time in New York City history, the city provided completely free childcare for two-year-olds.
2. Tenant Rights: The city successfully forced bad landlords to return tens of millions of dollars to tenants who were taken advantage of.
3. City Repairs: Local workers successfully paved over 165,000 potholes to fix city streets.
4. Public Safety: The city achieved these social programs while also recording the lowest crime rates in its history.
Moderate Democrats still insist these progressive victories will not work in more conservative swing states. However, with socialist groups now chanting warnings at high-ranking party leaders like Hakeem Jeffries, the internal fighting is far from over. As mainstream leaders try to keep control, Mamdani continues to mock the Anti-Socialist manifesto as primary wins shatter Democratic Party boundaries, proving the battle for the future of the party has officially begun.
