Amazon has disclosed that it received approximately $600 million in tariff refunds after the US Supreme Court ruled that many of President Donald Trump’s tariffs were unlawful.

The online retail giant made the announcement during its second-quarter earnings call on Thursday, with Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky confirming that part of the refunded money will be returned to eligible customers.

“We are participating in the tariff refund process and, as I mentioned earlier, we received approximately $600 million in Q2,” Olsavsky said.

The refunds follow a February decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, which struck down several tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977, requiring the government to reimburse import duties paid by affected businesses.

Several major companies, including Apple, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot and General Motors, also announced plans to seek similar refunds.

Earlier this year, Trump said he would “remember” companies that failed to apply for the refunds when asked whether some businesses, including Amazon, were reluctant to do so.

Apple also revealed on Thursday that the tariff refunds boosted its third-quarter earnings per share by five per cent, equivalent to 11 cents.

Amazon had not previously confirmed whether it would pursue the refunds. In May, consumers filed a class-action lawsuit against the company in Seattle, arguing that shoppers deserved reimbursement for tariff-driven price increases and alleging Amazon chose not to seek refunds to “curry favor” with Trump.

The company also drew criticism from the White House in April 2025 after reports suggested it planned to display the cost of Trump’s tariffs alongside certain products listed on its platform. Trump later contacted Amazon founder and Executive Chairman Jeff Bezos to complain about the proposal.

Explaining why Amazon’s refund amount was relatively modest, Olsavsky said the company had reduced its exposure by stockpiling inventory before the tariffs took effect.

“Second, we are not the importer of record for the large majority of items sold in our store,” he said.

He noted that many third-party merchants selling through Amazon’s marketplace had increased prices because of the tariffs and have also applied for refunds. Independent sellers account for more than 60 per cent of products sold on the platform.

Olsavsky added that customers affected by identifiable import charges would automatically receive refunds.

“We’ve identified a limited set of circumstances where we can trace that we’ve passed specific import charges onto customers, and when we receive those refunds, we will proactively contact affected customers and automatically issue refunds to them,” Olsavsky said.

“Otherwise, like other large retailers, we’ll utilize refunds to continue to invest in low prices for customers.”
