Norway has also asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign, making them the latest national football association to join mounting pressure on the president following the failure of his controversial World Cup investment plan.
The decision by the Norwegian FA comes following a meeting with Norwegian president Lise Klaveness, announcing after they feel Infantino’s leadership has “lost trust”. Klaveness stated: “When trust is gone, leadership must also be assessed. We therefore believe that Gianni Infantino’s time as FIFA president should be over and ask him to resign.”
The news follows news from FIFA that they had abandoned plans to sell a share in World Cup rights through a joint venture called the FIFA Forward Enterprise – the proposal that has been slammed by many of the sport’s governing bodies.
European body Uefa warned they may boycott FIFA events, despite FIFA acknowledging failings and apologising for the plan. That comes after the England Football Association (The FA) officially withdrew their support for Infantino to stand for re-election as the next president at a future FIFA Congress, though they join the Mexican football federation in endorsing Infantino in the meantime.
Norway say they will express concern over the Forward Enterprise deal, a peace award handed out to former United States President Donald Trump, and Folarin Balogun’s failed ban at last year’s World Cup.
