US Open organizers have handed a wildcard to returning Venus and Serena Williams, who will compete together in women’s doubles for the first time in four years at the Grand Slam.
The American sisters have teamed up since last season’s US Open, where Serena called time on her tennis career after her final game, but have not competed together in a Grand Slam final. They both competed at the Cincinnati Open more recently, where they fell to Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns in three sets.
The 44-year-old has made a return to competitive tennis, playing mixed doubles with Carlos Alcaraz at this year’s US Open, where the duo won their opening game prior to their quarter-final exit.
In her last appearance, at Wimbledon, she made an attempt to make a return to the singles court at SW19, where she was defeated by Australia’s Maya Joint and was ruled out of the doubles tournament with knee trouble, which prevented her playing with sister Venus.
Meanwhile, Venus has continued to play sparsely on the WTA tour and has already been awarded a singles wildcard to play at the 2023 Flushing Meadows. They have won 14 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles in their glittering partnership and most recently at Wimbledon, with last coming in 2016, winning the US Open tournament twice, both in ’99 and then a decade later.
In their careers, both sisters have been remarkably successful; they are yet to lose a Grand Slam doubles final together-their return to the tour and the Grand Slam takes place September 3 or 4.
