The ex-Liverpool and England defender appeared in court yesterday (September 20) for His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The 45-year-old TV presenter’s alleged unpaid tax debt meant that a bankruptcy petition was filed with the court by HMRC, whose primary intention was to recover money owed.
This followed claims Carragher and Sky Sports were disputing, and the court appearance has given us the first confirmation that a petition has been lodged.
A bankruptcy petition is a court request filed to reclaim tax or other outstanding payments, and HMRC described the process as a “last resort”.
HMRC would not discuss their dealings with individual taxpayers due to confidentiality but confirmed they try to help everyone solve any tax debts and “only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”
Former Liverpool and England international Carragher spent his entire 17-year career at Anfield, in which time he wore the famous red jersey 737 times and won one Champions League in 2005 as well as the UEFA Cup and two FA Cups and three League Cups.
After retiring in 2013, Carragher then moved into the media, where he is now one of television’s leading football pundits for Sky Sports in the United Kingdom and also works for CBS television in the USA, as well as having co-hosted the Stick to Football podcast with Gary Neville.
