The loss to Arsenal will be a major concern for Xabi Alonso, who couldn’t control midfield without Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, against the Gunners’ powerful midfield performance.
Alonso wanted his team to attack Arsenal rather than sit deep, an initial plan which saw him take the lead through Morgan Rogers. The gaps in midfield eventually became too much, though, as Arsenal sealed a 2-1 comeback.
Caicedo’s omission proved a big issue.
Alonso’s biggest concern is the loss of Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorian’s ability to cover space, win duels, and shield the defence was something truly missed in this big midfield battle, and was one of many reasons behind it.
Caicedo hasn’t made a start for the club this term and has had persistent fitness issues – Alonso admitting that he made a mistake trying to rush Caicedo back from injury against Brighton earlier in the campaign and would not repeat it.
January reinforcements could provide a solution
Chelsea have conceded seven in three this league campaign and are still without a Premier League clean sheet since January. Having sold the experienced Enzo Fernandez to Man City prior to the window closing, the Blues will likely be on the search for reinforcements to reinforce this midfield come January, but for now Alonso must solve the issue using his existing resources if their front-foot style is to become a success.
