Xabi Alonso believes Chelsea are not able to compete for 90 minutes in the Premier League after his team’s 3-0 humiliation to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Chelsea, who made a strong start to life under their new head coach with wins over Fulham and Brighton, have struggled in the weeks since with three consecutive fixtures without victory, defeats to Arsenal and Brentford followed by a draw with Hull City.
Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho scored in the second half, as Brentford beat a poor Chelsea display.
Before the weekend, Chelsea had already shipped 12 goals this season, the most in the league, and 8.82 expected goals against, also the worst in the division.
Alonso was downbeat after watching his side’s capitulation in west London. “At the moment, we are not consistent enough to compete throughout the whole game – 45 minutes is not enough,” he told Sky Sports.
Chelsea did not have the luxury of Joao Pedro being missing, though, as they look to work out where it all went wrong. “It’s not about looking for excuses,” Alonso said.
“We need to look at each other and know that we have to work and improve because there is still a long way to go.”
Chelsea’s next fixture after the international break is against Bournemouth on October 10.
