President Donald Trump’s family business interests are becoming increasingly connected to the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry, even as his administration continues to support faster development of the technology.

An analysis of Trump’s financial disclosures and corporate announcements found that his personal investments and ventures linked to his family have gained greater exposure to companies and infrastructure supporting the AI boom.

Several factors have shaped Trump’s support for accelerated AI development. He has built relationships with technology executives and investors who have called for faster government action on AI, including venture capitalist David Sacks, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

Trump has also expressed concern about the United States losing its technological and economic advantage to China, while celebrating record gains in the stock market, where AI-related companies have played a significant role.

However, his financial interests have also raised questions about potential conflicts as his administration makes policy decisions capable of affecting the value of investments connected to the AI industry.

Unlike several recent presidents, Trump has not placed his assets in a blind trust and has continued to buy and sell stocks while serving in office.

“No president since we’ve had this regime of conflict-of-interest statutes has ever conducted their finances this way,” said Don Fox, a former acting director of the Office of Government Ethics in the Obama administration.

“His predecessors in the post-Watergate era wanted the American people — whether they agreed with them or not — to believe the president was doing what was in the best interest of his country.”

The White House has rejected suggestions that Trump’s investments create conflicts of interest.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle said there are “no conflicts of interest”, adding that Trump’s investments are managed independently.

“All holdings are maintained in discretionary accounts and invested through computer-based model portfolios that automatically replicate recognized indexes, such as the Schwab 1000,” Ingle said in a statement.

“Neither President Trump nor any member of his family has any ability to direct, influence, or provide input regarding how the portfolio is invested or when investments are bought or sold.”

Trump’s AI-Linked Investments

Trump’s investment accounts have disclosed nearly 30,000 securities transactions since he returned to the White House, including purchases and sales involving companies that provide chips, servers and energy infrastructure used in AI development.

Government filings show that Trump has bought shares in companies including Dell Technologies, Micron Technology and GE Vernova. Their businesses benefit from the huge demand for computing capacity and electricity required to develop and operate advanced AI systems.

The shares of the three companies fell on Monday amid a broader decline in AI-related stocks after prominent technology figures raised concerns about the risks associated with rapidly advancing AI systems.

It remains unclear whether Trump still owns the shares because his financial disclosures do not require him to report stock transactions in real time. His filings also show purchases of other technology companies whose shares rose on the same day.

The financial links extend beyond Trump’s personal investment portfolio. Companies controlled by or connected to his family have also moved towards businesses benefiting from the growth of AI.

Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social, has announced plans to merge with nuclear fusion company TAE Technologies. The company plans to develop power plants at a time when electricity demand is rising partly because of the rapid construction of AI data centres.

Trump’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, also have financial interests in several AI and data-centre ventures, largely through investment firms including 1789 Capital and American Ventures.

Trump Jr. is a partner at 1789 Capital, which announced that it had raised a $1.2bn fund targeting real estate ventures, including projects connected to digital infrastructure such as data centres.

A spokesperson for 1789 Capital said Donald Trump Jr. was acting as a private citizen and not in any government capacity.

Debate Over AI Safeguards

The growing connection between Trump’s family businesses and AI comes as lawmakers, researchers and technology executives debate whether stronger safeguards are needed for increasingly powerful AI systems.

Concerns have intensified following warnings from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk about the possibility that AI development could advance faster than companies’ ability to control the technology.

Trump has responded to concerns about the pace of AI development by arguing against what he considers unnecessary restrictions.

Days ago, he posted that the only necessary guardrail for AI was “a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT.”

In another Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump suggested that “BAD” aspects of the industry could be addressed through enforcement of existing laws and a new, though largely undefined, “AI Force.”

The debate is also becoming an issue ahead of the US midterm elections, with multiple polls showing concerns among Americans about the speed of AI development and opposition to the construction of data centres.

Trump Family Businesses Expand Into Technology

Trump’s family businesses have moved beyond their traditional focus on real estate and entertainment since his first term, expanding into areas such as technology, cryptocurrency and digital infrastructure.

As TMTG prepares for its proposed merger with TAE Technologies, Truth Social has also increased its involvement in AI-related products.

TMTG interim CEO Kevin McGurn told CNBC in August that the company was entering the “AI world” by licensing access to Truth Social posts to AI laboratories.

AI companies use large volumes of social media content to train models designed to replicate patterns of human language.

TMTG plans to provide data through TruthAPI, a tool that gives companies and investors access to posts from Trump and other users. The system has attracted legal and ethical questions because it allows investors to receive some of the president’s announcements before the wider public.

Truth Social has also introduced an AI-powered search service using Perplexity’s “answer engine”. The tool generates responses using sources including Fox News and Newsmax, although previous reporting found that some of its answers contradicted Trump.

Cryptocurrency And AI Links

A significant portion of Trump’s income is also connected to cryptocurrency ventures.

Last year, he reportedly made more than $500m from World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency company founded in 2024 by Trump, his sons and the sons of Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East.

World Liberty Financial has worked with WorldClaw, a Hong Kong-based company offering access to various AI models. Customers can pay for the service using USD1, the token associated with World Liberty Financial.

WorldClaw provides access to AI models developed by Chinese companies that have been flagged by the US government over national security concerns, according to Reuters.

“World Liberty does not control WorldClaw’s product decisions, including which AI models it makes available. WorldClaw is not accessible to users in the United States,” David Wachsman, a spokesperson for World Liberty, wrote in an email.

The company did not directly respond to questions about whether the Trump family’s financial interest created a conflict, instead pointing to competition between WorldClaw and a similar Amazon product.

World Liberty Financial also sold a significant stake to investors linked to the United Arab Emirates shortly before Trump’s inauguration. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser and chairman of AI company G42, was involved in the purchase.

Trump’s Sons And AI Infrastructure

Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have also developed interests in companies involved in AI, robotics, defence and the infrastructure supporting the technology.

According to information from PitchBook and previous reports, companies connected to the brothers have invested in a range of AI-related businesses.

Trump Jr. became a partner at 1789 Capital shortly after his father won the 2024 presidential election. The firm describes itself as “funding the next generation of American exceptionalism” and has invested in companies connected to AI, including Cerebras Systems, Perplexity and Musk’s xAI, which later merged with SpaceX.

Eric Trump invests through American Ventures, a division of investment bank Dominari Holdings. His investments include companies involved in defence and robotics, including Space-Eyes, which uses AI to analyse data from satellites and other sensors.

A month after Trump returned to the White House, the two brothers launched American Data Centers, an initiative focused on expanding AI infrastructure.

The company later merged with American Bitcoin, a digital asset mining business majority-owned by crypto infrastructure firm Hut 8.

Hut 8 is developing Beacon Point, a major data-centre project in Texas, further linking the Trump family’s expanding business interests to the infrastructure behind the growing AI economy.
