A public political fallout happened on Saturday when President Donald Trump shared what appeared to be the personal cellphone number of Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton on social media, urging voters to call the lawmaker following a feud over the Sunshine Protection Act. The dispute centers on stalled federal legislation that aims to make daylight saving time permanent across the United States. While the House passed the bill in a 308-117 vote in July, Cotton, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has used procedural holds to stall the measure in the upper chamber.
Policy Standoff Over Permanent Daylight Saving Time
Trump publicly urged his followers, particularly those in Arkansas, to pressure Cotton into lifting his opposition so the Senate can vote to “lock the clock”. Cotton pushed back on social media, defending his stance by pointing to historical failures with permanent daylight saving time. The senator noted that previous legislative attempts resulted in pitch-black winter mornings that created safety hazards for schoolchildren waiting for buses and commuters heading to work. Trump countered that ending the bi-annual clock shift would eliminate widespread confusion and provide extra daylight hours for work, recreation, and sports.

Doxxing Tactics in High-Stakes Senate Battles
Publishing personal contact information online is a tactic Trump has previously deployed against congressional opponents during high-profile policy and political battles. During the 2016 Republican primary campaign, Trump publicly released the personal mobile number of South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham after Graham voiced criticism of his platform. Reporters attempted to call the number listed in Saturday’s social media post; the line went unanswered, and the associated voicemail inbox was completely full. Despite the public pressure campaign, Cotton maintained that he will continue to block the bill to protect his constituents from hazardous winter mornings.
My View
A president resorting to doxxing members of his own party because he cannot handle routine legislative resistance reveals a profound lack of maturity and self-control. Disagreements over policy, including daylight saving time, are a normal part of the democratic process. Senator Tom Cotton was raising valid concerns on behalf of parents in Arkansas, yet instead of engaging in reasoned debate or negotiation, Trump threw a temper tantrum and unleashed a mob onto a senator’s personal phone line.
This behavior is entirely unworthy of the presidency. A true leader uses the power of the office to unite, negotiate, and solve complex problems with dignity. Instead, Trump consistently degrades the office by prioritizing personal grievances and childish revenge tactics over basic professional conduct. If a leader cannot handle a simple dispute over daylight saving time without sinking to petty harassment, they prove themselves fundamentally unfit to bear the heavy responsibilities of leading a nation.
