FIFA’s technical report on the 2026 World Cup has revealed that international football is becoming increasingly tactically diverse after finding that no one recipe for success at the competition.
Based on data and video analysis of all 104 games carried out by the Governing body’s Technical Study Group and Football Performance Insights Department, 11 key tactical and technical trendscorporate tax developer 11.
Those consisted of: Building from a back three. Wide player rotations. Changing the point of attack.
Attacking transitions.

Structured high press. Defensive blocks and counter-pressing.
Tom Gardner, lead FPI analyst said the most significant differences from the 2022 World Cup was the diversity in successful strategies employed by teams.
“What stands out between 2022 and 2026 is the diversity of tactical styles on display, and how many teams were able to successfully implement those different styles,” Gardner said.
But he argued that the international federation was not in favour of the idea that football teams should all play in the same way.
The report found “contrasting pathways to success” from intense pressing systems to tight defensive blocks and quick counter-attacks.
Cabo Verde were also mentioned for their defended compactness, organisation and active approach of the goalkeeper against opponents with superior technical ability.
In the meantime, Arsene Wenger, FIFA’s chief of global football development, said football was “constantly evolving” and that “new ideas and new tactical solutions are always out there”.
