The Albi Celeste’ said a formal farewell to the Barcelona icon as he scored and created two assists in a 3-0 win over Benin.
The 39-year-old played his last game for the Albiceleste after more than 20 years representing his country, bringing a tear-jerking end to one of the most illustrious international careers in the game.
He provided Nicols Otamendi with the opening goal, before offering Nico Paz a second with a curling strike. He then rounded off the perfect send-off by slotting a penalty into the top corner for his 126th and final goal for Argentina.

And, after the final whistle, Messi turned to the Monumental faithful and appeared emotional.
“It was a huge pride to be able to defend this shirt for more than 20 years,” Messi said. “Not coming here will be very hard. I promise you that if it was up to me I’d stay here my whole life. Because to be Argentine is the most beautiful thing that can happen to anyone.”
He also thanked his team mates who helped him achieve his childhood dream of winning the World Cup, Copa Amrica and Finalissima.
He then circled the stadium one last time amid chants of “Messi is not leaving” from the crowd of thousands.
His career at Argentina may have ended, but his legacy will last forever.
