Trump Refuses to Endorse JD Vance for 2028 in Awkward Oval Office

Vice President JD Vance faced an awkward moment in the Oval Office during a press event announcing a new $25 million federal Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program.

When a reporter asked President Donald Trump whether he would endorse the 42-year-old for the Republican presidential ticket in 2028, Trump gave an evasive response, calling Vance “talented” and a “good” person but saying they had not discussed it.

The 80-year-old shifted the focus back to the midterms. “It’s early. We are very early right now. We have to get through the midterms. See how it goes. I’m going to rally in North Carolina,” he said.

The Follow-Up

The reporter followed up on Vance’s comment to Mark Halperin on 2WAY Tonight that the president would endorse him if he ran in 2028.

Halperin asked Vance if the endorsement would come immediately: “In other words, the day you announce—if you did—he’d endorse you, right?” Vance replied: “I think I’d get it right away, but I don’t know, man. I haven’t talked to him about it.”

Trump’s response in the Oval Office suggested that conversation had not happened.

Vance’s Response

Vance remained composed despite the awkward questioning. He said he expected to receive Trump’s endorsement but added: “I also think there’s something to be said for candidates actually running their own race. Because the president’s endorsement is so dispositive, you could see a scenario where he says, ‘Let this race play out and not preemptively judge the results.'”

Vance is seen as an early frontrunner for the Republican ticket in 2028, though he has not expressed any desire to run so far.

A Pattern of Ambiguity

This is not the first time Trump has been coy about endorsing Vance. In a February 2025 interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, who asked,

“Do you view Vice President JD Vance as your successor?” Trump’s response was swift: “No, but he’s very capable. I think you have a lot of very capable people.”

Vance has also been noncommittal about his ambitions.

In a recent interview with CBS’s Tony Dokoupil, when asked if there was a chance he would not run in 2028, Vance replied: “Of course there’s a chance. We’ve got four little kids, and my wife has never loved politics, though she loves public service. I’m a procrastinator. I hate thinking about it, and I’ll only consider it after the midterms.”

The Bottom Line

President Trump declined to endorse Vice President JD Vance for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination during an Oval Office event, saying they had never discussed it. The moment was awkward because Vance had recently said he expected Trump’s endorsement “right away.” Trump has previously declined to call Vance his successor. Vance remains a frontrunner for 2028 but has not committed to running.

My Opinion

JD Vance learned a hard lesson this week: in Trump’s world, loyalty is a one-way street. You defend him. You praise him. You say you expect his endorsement “right away.” And then he stands next to you in the Oval Office and tells the world you have never even talked about it.

Trump knows exactly what he is doing. By refusing to endorse Vance, he keeps the vice president on his toes. He reminds every other ambitious Republican that the 2028 nomination is his to give, not Vance’s to inherit. He keeps the spotlight on himself, where he has always wanted it. And he does it with a smile, calling Vance “talented” while leaving him twisting in the wind.

Vance handled it as well as anyone could. He stayed composed. He said he expected the endorsement anyway. He even offered Trump an off-ramp: maybe the president wants the race to “play out.”
