Why Lead Is Dangerous

Lead is a toxic metal that can cause serious health problems when consumed. Exposure is particularly concerning for children and pregnant women, as it can affect brain development and other bodily functions. According to the FDA, there is no known safe level of lead exposure.

In young children, chronic exposure has been linked to learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and lower IQ. In adults, it has been tied to kidney damage, neurological problems, and high blood pressure.

What Shoppers Should Do

If you have the recalled canned fruit in your pantry, do not eat it. Throw it away or return it to your local Walmart for a potential refund. The recall was initiated on October 1, meaning the impacted cans are likely no longer on store shelves.

For additional questions about the recall, contact the FDA at 1-888-INFO-FDA (1-888-463-6332).

The Bottom Line

Walmart has recalled more than 44,000 cans of Great Value Fruit Cocktail in seven states due to elevated lead levels. The recall is classified as Class II. Shoppers should check their pantries for the affected lot code and best-by date and discard the product immediately.
