Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was given a prison term of over 20 years for violating George Floyd’s civil rights. In December, Chauvin, 46, entered a guilty plea to several federal civil rights offences. He already has a 22-year state jail term for the on-the-job murder of Mr. Floyd, a black man in his 46s. Chauvin has been transferred to a federal prison, where the two terms will run simultaneously.
But after the sentencing, he’ll almost definitely do extra time in jail. After serving his term, he will be released under supervision for five years. Mr. Floyd’s brother, Philonese, pleaded with the judge to impose the maximum punishment of 25 years on Thursday, saying, “George’s life matters.”In Minnesota, Chauvin, a white guy, was found guilty of murder and manslaughter after he knelt on Mr. Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.
The murder, which was caught on a witness’s cellphone camera, caused widespread anger and a wave of protests against racial injustice and police brutality.
Two counts of violating Mr. Floyd’s rights by kneeling on his neck while he was wearing handcuffs and neglecting to offer medical attention during the arrest in May 2020 were included in the federal allegations brought against Chauvin.
Following the terms of the plea deal, Chauvin also admitted guilt to violating the rights of a kid who was then 14 years old during a different arrest that took place in 2017.
The youngster was handcuffed and not struggling when Chauvin allegedly held him by the throat, struck him in the head with a flashlight, and placed his knee on the boy’s neck and upper back. The youngster was black, just like Mr. Floyd.
The unreleased bodycam film, according to the prosecution, shows Chauvin kneeling on the boy’s back for 17 minutes as he screamed for his mother.
When Chauvin entered a guilty plea, the prosecution requested that he spend his prison time alongside his murder conviction. If we were found guilty in a subsequent criminal trial, he would have been sentenced to life in prison.
His attorney asked for a 20-year sentence in court on Thursday, arguing that the defendant respected the legal system during his trial and poses no threat of reoffending.
Speaking before the court for what is probably going to be his last court appearance for a while, Chauvin acknowledged that the court aims for fairness and acknowledged that the judge had a difficult decision to make given the politically heated environment.
Chauvin addressed the children of Mr. Floyd, some of whom were present in court, wishing them all the best in life and wishing them great guidance in becoming good adults. He made no excuses.
Before imposing the punishment, Judge Paul Magnuson said, “For your actions, you must be held accountable.”
The 35-minute hearing was completed with him wishing Chauvin the utmost best in his future.
