Nigeria is likely to become the third-largest country in the world before the year 2050. This is according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ newest data.

This latest information said that the Nigerian population will pass that of the United States of America. At the moment though, China is the largest country in the world.

According to the report, the world population is projected to reach 8 billion by November 15, 2022. India’s population is estimated to overtake China’s by 2023. Currently, the world population is at 7.6 billion and is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050, and 11.2 billion in 2100. Every year, 83 million individuals are added to the world population and the upward trend is expected to continue even if fertility levels continue to plummet.

China and India are for now the two most populous countries in the world.

From 2017 to 2050, it is expected that half of the world’s population will be concentrated in just nine countries below:

1. India

2. Nigeria

3. the Democratic Republic of Congo

4. the United Republic of Tanzania

5. the United States of America

6. Uganda

7. Indonesia

Meanwhile, Africa continues to experience high rates of population growth. Between 2017 and 2050, the populations of 26 African countries are expected to expand to at least twice their current size.

In recent years, the number of children birthed by women has decreased in nearly all regions of the world. Even in Africa, where fertility levels are higher than in any other region’, the total fertility has fallen from 5.1 births per woman in 2000-2005 to 4.7 in 2010-2015.
